Each piece represents a Longleaf pine tree that is STILL alive and standing in a Alabama forest! (If you count the rings- you'll be able to tell how old your tree is within a few years.)
The Alabama legislature first designated the state tree as "the southern pine tree" in 1949. In 1997 the southern longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) was specified. The longleaf pine ecosystem once covered 90 million acres in the Southeastern United States.
